Betting on bush racing on a Group 1 Saturday is a classic pastime of mine. At Warracknabeal on Saturday, there are a couple of horses that appear to have better races ahead of them. Learning from previous experience at the track, I’m trying to find runners with plenty of early speed and those that are drawn toward the inside of the track, especially over the short course races. Good luck! Make sure to follow along on @mitchbetAU.

Race 3 Number 9 Fortunate Kiss
This 3yo filly debuted in the Group 3 Chairman’s Stakes at Caulfield being beaten 3.5L by Enthaar. That alone is good enough form for this. Drawn well in barrier 3 and gets a great bush jockey in Dean Holland. Trialed well and in quick time leading into this. Hoping that Inebriating gets scratched, she’s the clear danger off some impressive jumpouts and would be close to top pick had she not drawn wide.
Race 6 Number 8 Herman Hesse
This is a pretty good race for Warracknabeal on a Saturday with a few that have been competitive on the country cups circuit and midweek metro grade. I really liked the Australian debut of Herman Hesse in a very strong run race at Ballarat. He was well supported from $18 into $11 and was doing his best work late. The Maher and Eustace stable must be respected in these sorts of races and I think he can win this and go onto better things. FYI has nominations for the Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup.
Race 2 Number 2 James The Great
A bit of a spec bet here on the debutant from the Cumani stable James The Great. He’s by a European sire Zebedee, who to my surprise wasn’t a stayer and won five races over 1000m. James The Great recently finished second in a St Arnaud barrier trial in what was the quickest time of the morning. Importantly showed speed out of the gates there and is better drawn than his main rivals on Saturday. I anticipate the Maher and Eustace-trained Wilsons Prom or Ga Ga Gus for the the McEvoy’s will be at the head of the market. I probably have James The Great rated as a $7 or $8 chance so will be keen to pounce if better odds are on offer.
