In trying to chase a winner as far off Broadway as possible this Derby Day, I’ve landed at Wycheproof for their Cup meeting. Abandoned last year, the meeting is back on this Saturday and has Sky2 status (no racing.com coverage today!).

Race 1 Number 5 Keiichi

When bought by trainer Henry Dwyer for $170,000, I imagine he would have had higher hopes than trying to knock off at maiden at Wycheproof on Derby Day. Debuted in town at Morphettville, before failing badly at Swan Hill second up. After whacking on a tongue tie and nasal strip, was a sneaky good run in a strong maiden at Ballarat. There’s really not a lot of depth in this race. She’s fit, fourth up and won’t get an easier chance to break her maiden than here.

Suggested bet: Keiichi to win (Currently $5)

Race 2 Number 4 Vasbert

This event is shallower than the first and looks a great opportunity for the Matt Cumani-trained Vasbert score a breakthrough win. You have to forget his last 2 runs where he was ridden wide without cover and was never been given a chance. His run on debut when in the market was very solid and several winners have since come from that race. Has drawn barrier 1 so shouldn’t have to worry about getting caught wide here and has Tatum Bull in the saddle, who is currently on loan at the Cumani stable. Should be peaking 4th up I and think is a winning hope at the price.

Suggested bet: Vasbert to win (Currently $4)

Race 3 Number 4 Watch Point

Swan Hill trainer Joe Kelly hasn’t trained a winner since March 2018, however I think his horse Watch Point can return him to the winners stall at Wycheproof Saturday. On the quick back up from the Swan Hill meeting on Tuesday, the 4YO gelding has improved sharply since getting out in trip his past two starts. His dam, while a maiden, ran her best races up in trip also. I almost was making a case for 29 start maiden There For You so that gives you an idea of the quality field going around here…

Suggested bet: Watch Point to win, only if the price is above $3. The trainer hasn’t trained a winner in yonks don’t forget…
