I hit the road to Geelong with high hopes of a fill up. But after a well backed favourite in race three couldn’t manage a place, confidence took a bit of a hit. Here’s my review of the day!

Race one

Completely missed the winner. Champagne Witness ran another placing as expected. I promise for good this time, I’ll never back/tip Typhoon Moon again. I could potentially have moved postcodes if I add up all the money I’ve lost on her.

Race two

Good win Jupitus. I Am Enchanting improved today with blinkers on. Was a no bet race for me personally. Star performer here was the $10 burger, chips and coke combo I smashed for lunch.

Race three

Couldn’t have had enough on Chief Conductor after seeing him in the pre parade. Literally made a dash to find a bookie so I could get on again. Had a great run in transit but gave nothing when called upon. As disappointing as his performance was, 10/10 would back again at the $2.60 if you saw how good he looked pre race.

Chief Conductor looked even better in the flesh.

Race four

Bet regret is real and my biggest of the day was talking myself out of backing Sachem. Had him the one to beat but talked myself out of it because of the price. I liked him, the market liked him but I instead tried to re-invent the wheel. You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take and sometimes you’ve just got to take the $2 if you like it.

Race five

To my untrained eye, Appealing looked either a little thick/wooly (?) in the coat pre race. Was off the bit and chasing from a long way out but could only manage second. The winner Inari was just a class above. Almost the win of the day for mine as Fred Kersley was hands and heels through the line. Cumani striding around with the mare should have been a giveaway.

There was something just a little off for mine with Appealing in the coat.

Race seven

Double Delight on the each way, runs 4th. Gross.

Race eight

I had to do a complete double take when I saw what price Villa Sarchi was before the eighth event. George Osborne was on track with the one runner, I thought he was a very good each way chance but with the price now gone, I tumbled in win only. Led the whole way until run down late by something trained by Andrew Homann. Probably should have taken this as my queue to leave…

Race nine

Tried to blast out in the last and had it between Hurtle and Rose Quartz. Backed the former, and immediately after placing the bet, the market came hard for the latter. Personally just a silly bet and sometimes being at the track can get the best of you!

As a Melbournian who has been housebound for the best part of 18 months, I relish getting the chance to get to the track on a Tuesday arvo and give the bookies some free money. Sometimes it’s just not your day (Villa Sarchi, Double Delight, Appealing), sometimes you make your own luck (Sachem, chasing in the last). All in all, punting is no science and it’s about making mistakes and learning from them.

Horses to follow

Jayeffthunder – Looked to have some condition, trialed like it would need the run.

Jupitus – Very easy winner

Alavista – Her breeding suggests will be better over further and took lengths off others late in the inferior ground.

Inari – The win of the day for mine. If I could take one home, it would be her. If only I could afford her!
