Day two of the Warrnambool May Carnival is in important day for the punt. If you’ve had a good first day, you may come in over confident and blow that hard earned bank. If you’ve been hit for six by the bookies, it’s about getting the not trying to get it all back in one bet and making sure you have something to defend heading into the final day. In my eyes, Wednesday’s meeting is significantly more competitive than Tuesday and I’ll be looking to strike very early in the maiden section of the program.
Race 1 – 11:20AM Warrnambool City Volkswagen 2YO Handicap (1200 METRES)
The horse I’ve kept hearing about during the lead up to Warrnambool has been Yellow Sam (10). Trial experts, talking heads on tv and Lindsey Smith himself. That’s a good enough push for me. This Ready For Victory filly has won both her jumpouts prior to debut, the second one at Terang was in the quickest of the morning. Barrier one may still be a positive, being only the 11th race of the carnival and champion jockey Damian Oliver in the saddle is a plus. Could be a big betting go for this girl.
Suggested bet: Yellow Sam to win.
Race 2 – 11:50AM Western District Electrical Services Maiden Plate (1400 METRES)
A big field and competitive field where several horses could easily have city wins in them in the future. I’m happy to have a small play on the Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-trained Hollywood Siren (10) that she can go one better first up this prep. It’s not often a carnival goes by where the green and blue McKenna silks don’t feature, this $220,000 Melbourne Premier purchase has had two quiet, yet powerful jump outs in preparation for her return. The most recent at Stawell, she was back in behind some seasoned older horses such as Pankhurst and Le Don De Vie.
It’s a wide open race, but $8 for a Maher/Eustace horse to be ridden by John Allen seems a solid play in the second.
Suggested bet: Hollywood Siren (10) each way.
Race 3 – 12:20PM Bottle-O Warrnambool 3YO Maiden Plate (1700 METRES)
In not the deepest race of the week, I’ll be having something each way on the Tom Dabernig-trained Maatsuyker (3). Purely on the basis that he probably shouldn’t even be eligible for this maiden after events over the border last start. The gelding by Adelaide was wide for most of the trip at Penola before having the eventual winner lay out into him for most of the home straight taking out his run. The step up to 1700m suits and being a local at a decent price ($26), he seems a great play on the each way.
Suggested bet: Maatsuyker (3) each way.
