It was a massive day for the bookies and a day of misses for the tips on Derby Day. However on a usually tough and competitive card on Cup Day we hope to atone. The theme of the day is taking on a lot of favourites and I’ve landed on a bit of value with the top tips.
Don’t forget to follow MitchbetAU on most socials and gamble responsibly. We need to keep that bank for Oaks and Champions Day!
Flemington Best Bet: Race 4 Number 1 Barber
He’s the class horse in the race with a class jockey on board and meets his opponents pretty well at the weights. If he can handle the straight track, as he displayed in a recent Flemington jumpout, he will be mighty hard to beat.
Flemington Next Best Bet: Race 9 Number 10 Belle Et Riche
The Mitch Freedman-trained mare went around untested in the Group 2 Blazer Stakes at Caulfield behind Life Lessons and Princess Grace. Previous form around Wrote To Arataki at this track also lines up well for this. She’s come up with a shocker of a barrier here but we’re getting a decent price to find out if she can overcome.
Flemington Best Value Bet: Race 3 Number 6 Savatoff
This 3YO gelding by Savabeel should have finished a lot closer to today’s favourite Aztec State on their only meeting at Bendigo on the 27th of September. That day he had to steady off heels at the 100m and the winner had an unimpeded run. Mum was a winner over 2000m in town and stepping up to 1800m looks very much in his favour. If you’re making a case for the favourite, Savatoff has to be in your calculations.
Echuca Best Bet: Race 4 Number 9 Strapperoo
3YO colt by Ztravagant that is debuting here after showing speed to lead and win a recent 1000m Cranbourne. Drawn to land somewhere near the speed and with enough doubts over the favourite after a few below par performances, should be in this a long way. Has been the subject of support in early betting $6.50 into $4.80.
Echuca Next Best: Race 5 Number 1 Cryostat
Comes out of a fairly strong debut run at Seymour where his last 400m was 4.9L quicker than standard time. Has since had a quiet jumpout at Cranbourne and the 1400m looks to suit this striking grey by Frosted.
Echuca Best Roughie: Race 3 Number 5 Talk To Me Goose
A debutant for local trainer Michael Newton, this 4YO by Rebel Dane has shown enough ability to finish second in two Seymour jumpouts on either side of a quiet official trial at Benalla. Keep an eye out for any market support.
Flemington selections by Mitchell Hamilton
Race 1: Darley Maribyrnong Plate 1000m 10.45am
Blue Stratum 4, Odinson 7, Admitted 1, Catoggio 5.
One of the more visually impressive jumpouts with the jockey continually looking over his shoulder wondering where his opposition were. Missed a run as emergency in the Inglis Banner at MV on Cox Plate day.
Race 2: Furphy Plate 1800m 11.20am
Lord Vladivostok 6, Pounding 1, Sibaaq 3, Mr Maestro 7.
Will be rock hard fit following a run at Flemington on Derby Day
Race 3: TAB Trophy 1800m 12.00pm
*Savatoff 6, Aztec State 2, Binotto 3, Warmonger 7.
Race 4: The Schweppervescence Plate 1000m 12.40pm
***Barber 1, Capitalisation 9, Revalene 8, Stanislaus 3.
Race 5: The Macca’s Run 2800m 1.20pm
Garachico 10, King’s Crossing 5, Mr Waterville 3, Third Realm 1.
The Benchmark 70 won by Kings Crossing on Geelong Cup day was run quicker than the Cup itself. Garachico meets Kings Crossing 6kg better today.
Race 6: MSS Security Subzero Handicap 1400m 1.55pm
Glint Of Silver 2, Mysweetmoses 12, Frost Yourself 10, Platinum Wolf 9.
Race 7: Lexus Melbourne Cup 3200m 3.00pm
Breakup 4, Vauban 5, Gold Trip 1, Cleveland 10.
Loomed up in the Caulfield Cup like a winning hope until his fitness might have given out. With that run under his belt and the great form at 3200m, he can improve sharply regardless of the barrier draw.
Race 8: Howden Desirable Stakes 1400m 3.50pm
Bizot 17, Commemorative 13, Lady In Pink 9, Kimochi 3.
A really wide open race that will shed further light on the Thousand Guineas picture. Bizot exploded late to show a nice turn of foot winning her maiden at Ballarat. Archie Alexander and Declan Bates have a great strike rate when partnering up.
Race 9: The Hong Kong Jockey Club Stakes 1400m 4.35pm
**Belle Et Riche 10, Skew Wiff 2, Climbing Star 12, Madame Pommery 1.
Race 10: Paramount+ Trophy 1400m 5.15pm
Robusto 14, Foxy Cleopatra 18, Chorlton Lane 16, Dubai Poet 7.
Really tough way to end the day.
