There’s nothing like a secondary meeting on a Saturday to get the juices flowing. Get in, attack some of the maidens and hopefully make a dollar or two. Or at the least, get some strange looks at the TAB when you’re betting on a bush meeting on a Group One day!
(please note: preview written before fixed odds markets were available)
Race one:
It’s always tough to line up two year olds without much exposed form. I’m drawn to the first starter down the bottom (10) Tycoon Humma. Looked to be going the better of stablemate La Rocque in a recent Geelong trial until it was eased down into second. That horse subsequently won at Pakenham last week.
I’m hoping we get a better price for her as the Snowden’s and Freedman’s have made the trip to Bendigo with a few likely types. Oracolo for Griffths/De kock could also come up ‘unders’ in the market. He won his jumpout by a big margin, but the clock didn’t exactly back up the dominance.
With all that in mind, hopefully we get some juice about Tycoon Humma in a tough race.
Race two:
Diabolical race, but could be persuaded to have a bet on the grey (5) Irish Pardon. It’s his sixth run this prep, so lets hope he’s rock hard fit and not burnt out. He’s been stuck out the back at Stony Creek (not ideal) and caught wide at Geelong and Mornington. Dropping back 300m is also a plus.
Not sure what to make of the others. Reckon I backed Magicain at Hamilton in 2019 when I thought it was a good thing and he’s still a maiden. Not that I’m dirty or anything…
I could probably take anything more than $2.50 if available. But don’t go betting the house.
Race three:
A much more open affair to my eyes. Let’s hope the punters are put off by the last start 4L Werribee defeat of (6) Anglian so we can get a decent price to back him here. The gelding was in a very hot form race at Moe last September and in his most recent start he looked all at sea over the 1000m on the heavy. Will appreciate the step up to 1300m.
Out of the others, (10) Electrifying Lady can most definitely improve in her second start for the Bowman stable. Love seeing Dean Yendall on board. Scared stiff of (14) Raise The Colours. Looked very green in her jumpout, will improve on whatever she does. Can I back her to win? Possibly, if the price is right. One for the blackbook already.
Risking Ultimate Man. Yes, he’s a local. Yes, he was $41-$26 last start. I just can’t have him off his jumpouts and first up run. A big avoid from me.
Race four:
Going around the horse who I anticipate will be favourite, Divine Rule, I’ve narrowed it down to (6) Big Friday and (7) Fire Wheel. Big Friday’s most recent jumpout he missed the kick and was chasing the whole time. But his previous jumpout, he left the gates with them, showed speed all while under a hold. If he performs closer to that effort, is a good winning hope.
If having your heart in your mouth is your kind of thing, Fire Wheel will be back in the field, with Jamie Mott looking to weave a path through traffic from gate two. Wasn’t much market support first up, which is a worry for the Ryan stable. Bendigo is a forgiving track, so running on is not out of the question.
Divine Ruler looked good in a Flemington jumpout, the time wasn’t anything flash and as a personal rule, I usually avoid horses that run a lot of placings without winning. Let’s hope she comes up really short and runs a nice second or third behind our top two.
