Following a pretty successful day at Coleraine due to Lindsey Smith and Mitch Freedman, I’ve picked out a few choice plays at Mildura to liven up a Monday wherever you are. Make sure to follow @MitchBetAU on twitter for updates and good luck!
Race 1 No. 3 Madetobebroken
This 4YO gelding had jumped out and trialed well before his debut at Mildura where he left the gates positively, however looked a little green in the straight. Appeared to maybe cop a stray whip to the nose when he was about to take a run. The favourite Thunder Park looks the only other winning hope, but is well found at $1.35. Madetobebroken with natural improvement can easily win this.
Suggested bet: Matetobebroken to win. $6 available looks a good price.
Race 2 No. 1 Avenel Grey
One at a bit of a price, this 5YO gelding is having just his second start following a debut in January at Werribee. Started $6 that day, became badly worked up in the mounting yard before the race, finished up with a slower than normal recovery and an abrasion above his eye. Trainer Saab Hassan has since gelded him, put on ear muffs, a tongue tie and will make use of a barrier extension, so he’s using all the tricks to get him in check. Finished last in a recent jumpout where he moved well and wasn’t asked for an effort, however showed speed to win and run third in both jumpouts prior to that.
Imposing Brook is a talented 3yo who deserves to be favourite. I’d be surprised if Avenel Grey doesn’t put in a much improved performance on resumption at Mildura and it worth a play at odds.
Suggested bet: Avenel Grey each way
Race 4 No. 7 Coconut Queen
Strongly advocating against taking the $1.75 for the favourite Bannerton and have landed on the Paul Preusker-trained Coconut Queen. This is her fourth start this preparation and is finally getting to a suitable trip of 2000m. Her dam won races from 2200m-3375m so her breeding suggests she’s crying out for a trip. She was warming up late at her most recent start at Murtoa on the 12th of July and I really like her acceleration coming around heels in the home straight. Preusker is a leading trainer around these parts and Coconut Queen is a good bet at $5.
Bannerton has been close to a win several times, however tends to mix form and his racing pattern can sometimes be less than ideal. Definitely a winning hope, but I think is under the odds at $1.75.
Suggested bet: Coconut Queen to win.
Race 8 No. 4 Zoutons
This 4YO by Zoustar was the 4th emergency in a race at Flemington last Saturday but failed to get a start so is here at Mildura. He has a terrific SP profile and drops back in class from a close second in a benchmark 70 at this track last start. Looked to be a winning hope first up before a lack of fitness may have pulled him up late. He came into that run off only one jumpout instead of two in previous campaigns. Maps well to be near the speed from barrier two.
Shadow Goddess for Patrick Payne is the main danger but will most likely be at the opposite end of the field. A few slow horses falling back into his lap will spell danger for him.
Suggested bet: Zoutons to win.
